Tomsk Akademgorodok Tomsk is an oldest centre of science and education in Siberia; the history of the Tomsk State University and the Tomsk Polytechnic University counts over one hundred years. Professors and graduates of these universities made a considerable contribution to the creation of the Novosibirsk Science Centre and other centres of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences. At the same time, rapid growth of the Siberian Branch stimulated foundation of an academic science centre in Tomsk in 1979.

The Institute of Atmospheric Optics and the off-branched Institute of Optical Monitoring study propagation of optical radiation in the Earth and other planets’ atmosphere, dynamic and climate-forming atmospheric processes and their changes in response to natural and anthropogenic effects.

The main objective of studies run in the Institute of Heavy-Current Electronics is to provide a scientific basis for production of new instruments and technologies.

The Institute of Strength Physics and Material Science deals with physical mesomechanics of materials and its practical use for strengthening units of machines and mechanisms and creating new materials with preassigned properties. At the Institute, the International Centre for Studies in Physical Mesomechanics is organised.

The territory of the Tomsk region comprises an oil province and is in great portion covered by forests. Studies of hydrocarbon raws and elaboration of technologies for processing of natural gas, oil and coal are run by scientists from the Institute of Petroleum Chemistry. Problems of cedar forests and the related ecosystems constitute the main subject of work in the Tomsk Department of the Sukachev Institute of Forest.

The institutes of the Tomsk Centre produced a number of unique national-scale experimental installations, such as the multi-channel multifrequency Siberian Lidar Station for laser sensing of atmosphere, troposphere and stratosphere; the world first orbital space lidar «Balkan-1» working aboard the orbital space probe «Mir»; the powerful generator of electron pulses GIT-16 broadly used in international projects, etc.

Since the academic science was established in Tomsk, much attention has been paid to promotion of design-and-production organisations for engineering development and model launching. Fundamental studies, run by the Tomsk Centre institutes in collaboration with specialised science institutions, higher schools and industrial enterprises, have practical application in creation of new technologies, instruments and materials. The Tomsk Science Centre of the SB RAS is among founders of the Tomsk technopark, together with higher schools and industrial enterprises of the city.

Tomsk State University - the oldest university in Siberia The Tomsk Science Centre institutes work in close relationship with universities. On the basis of academic institutes, a number of chairs have been established, where research is carried out jointly by scientists-professors and their students. The higher schools of the city and the institutes of the Tomsk Science Centre have a common information network with access to Internet and make up a Regional Scientific and Educational Complex where a number of multidisciplinary programmes are currently underway.

The Tomsk Science Centre is sited separately but not far from the city centre, in a forest tract. The Centre’s well-develo-ped infrastructure includes all necessary amenities, such as a club («House of Scientists»), a hotel, a business-centre, satellite communication facilities, etc. that is favourable for communication between scientists and their business partners. Harmonic development of the Science Centre made Tomsk Akademgorodok one of the most popular districts of the city.
